Picturing Identity in Early Modern French Ballet and Masquerade

Join us to see art historian, Sarah Buck, examine the evolution of French costume design in ballets and masquerades of the early modern era. With the assistance of a colorful, dazzling, and delightful cast of characters created by artists of the School of Fontainebleau and of the courts of the Bourbon dynasty, she demonstrates how costume design was shaped by the writings of contemporary dance theorists. It will be an interesting and engaging lesson in history! There also will be cheese and wine at the event, as well!

November started as an exercise where two scenes from two different plays were melded together to create one cohesive story. The first scene follows a son’s journey of grieving his mother’s death and the disappearance of his cat, while the second provides a lens into a familial dispute. The choice to have one actor play both the son in the first scene and his father in the second scene was purely experimental and added a specific dynamic to this already concocted story.

Join us as five of USM’s best illustrators battle it out in INK WARS III. Armed with only a handful of sharpies and their wits, our student illustrators will battle it out for the title of best illustrator. The students will have one hour to complete their illustration. The theme of the illustrations will be revealed to the contestants at the beginning of the event. Viewers get to join in on the action by voting for their favorite illustration.

Visiting Guest Artist Lecture with Michael Brohman – Closing Day of the Show
Join us to hear visiting artist, Michael Brohman, speak about his works of art in the current exhibition, "In a World of Circles and Squares," a show of narrative works that confront the notion of divisiveness, and categorize the viewer as possessing either "inclusiveness" or "otherness." Brohman's works are beautifully crafted, quiet and contemplative, while at the same time, potentially raw and unsettling.
